In the wake of a series of high-profile instances of violence against women by men who claim to be female, many have begun writing about gender in the wake.
In 2016, New York Times bestselling author Alyssa Rosenberg, who describes herself as a “naturally queer woman, feminist, and writer” penned a piece for New York Magazine about her experiences navigating her identity.
In 2018, Brooklyn-based writer and poet Rachel Chatsman began writing about her life and identity through a combination of her own experiences as a trans woman, her understanding of gender roles in the media, and her relationship to the community.
In 2017, The New Yorker published a piece by former Slate contributor and writer Caitlin Moran about how her gender-nonconforming experiences have impacted her writing, and in 2018, poet Tanya Huffman began a series on the intersection of gender and sexuality.
In 2020, author and blogger Laura Kate Dale was asked to write a book about her gender identity and gender-role development.
The book, The Body That Comes Next, is slated to release in 2021.
In 2018, the New Yorker named the 2017 best novel from the best novel category, and the magazine’s best book award was awarded to writer and feminist Angela Zuckerman’s book The Way Home, which won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for fiction.
In 2019, the book that had the most buzz in the New York City literary community was published by Simon & Schuster, with an excerpt of the novel on the cover.
“I didn’t feel like I had any other choice, and I didn’t think about how to write about it.
I was so grateful for that,” Zuckeman said in an interview with the New Republic.
“When I read it I was completely blown away.
I didnt know how to say no to that.”
Zuckman told the magazine that she started reading The Way Next after hearing the book was set to be published, and she didn’t know her own identity until her own daughter came home from a mental health session.
Alyssa’s book, published in 2018 and a New Yorker cover story in 2019, became an instant bestseller.
Rosenberg said she wanted to create a story that explored a “feminine power dynamic,” as well as a way for readers to explore their own gender identity.
“The way to understand gender is through the lens of gender,” Rosenberg told the New Hampshire Union Leader.
“There are other ways to understand it, but its not something that comes from a box.
There is no one, singular way to think about gender, and no one way to feel the way you feel.”
“What does it mean to be a woman, to be in the gender binary?”
The New York Post asked the author of The Body that Comes Next in 2018.
“The answer is not something you can find in the dictionary,” she said.
“It’s something that happens when you are inside of yourself.”
Zuckerman said that as a woman who identifies as queer, her experiences in the queer community have been different from her experience in the mainstream feminist community.
“I think a lot of women have always felt like they could be women and not be,” Zinkerman said.
Zuckererman said she thinks about her own gender role in the book, but that her experience with women in general was different.
“I think that I could be a man and I could still be a feminist,” Zuckererman told the Union Leader in 2018 .
“There is a lot that comes out of a woman’s body that is really just an extension of that person’s personality, and it doesn’t make them a woman.
They just have that body.”
In 2019, The Times published a New York magazine cover story about transgender women.
The story, called Transgender Is Not a Choice, discussed transgender women who have experienced discrimination and violence in the name of gender dysphoria, which is the diagnosis given to gender identity disorder.
The New Jersey Transgender Law Center reported in 2018 that transgender women were more likely to experience violence and suicide than the general population.
Maggie Hart, an author of books like In the Body That Came Next, told The New Republic that her book has “a lot of queer people talking about it, a lot more people who identify as trans.”
Hart, who has since moved on to work on her own memoir, told the newspaper that she hopes her work will help other transgender people who feel like they have a choice but are still uncomfortable with their bodies.
“When I think about my own body, I feel like it is my body and I have to choose,” Hart said in a podcast with The New Inquiry.
“For a lot [of people] there is a kind of discomfort with their own bodies, or with their
